Underserved Population poses unique risks
for Sleep Disorders

And Obstructive Sleep Apnea is one of the novel clinical conditions which effect the Cardiovascular health and Stroke. Socially disadvantaged racial, ethnic, and other population groups, and communities experience a wide array of problems in managing Sleep Apnea with social barriers, literacy barriers, adherence, and many more.
Causing discontinuity of care or unable to point when or where to seek care from resulting in much costly episodes of care as well as suboptimal outcomes in Sleep Apnea and CardioVascular Conditions.

The stats are sobering.

Approx 20-30% of the Medicare population are living with Sleep Apnea
90% of Medicaid, Medicare patients don’t know their treatment options,
Removable oral appliances or surgery
3X more likely to have a stroke due to moderate to severe sleep apnea
58% of Sleep Apnea patients have comorbidities like hypertension, obesity, CVD
CPAP is an effective treatment for OSA that may reduce health care utilization and costs. For Medicare and Medicaid patients, regulations state that the coverage of CPAP is initially limited to a 12-week period for beneficiaries diagnosed with OSA as determined Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) criteria. CPAP is subsequently covered only if the patient is adherent during a 90-day trial. If not, Medicare requires a repeat polysomnogram (PSG) and another trial which seems empirically not cost-effective.
Most Medicaid and Dual Medicare patients have very poor adherence rate increasing the utilization and costs. This is attributed to low health literacy, social barriers, behavioral factors among others.

Why now?

Sleep disparities have been recognized as an important contributor to disparities in overall health in socially disadvantaged groups. Not only understanding the causes of sleep health disparities and their impact on non-white and economically disadvantaged populations, but also identifying and testing potential solutions, and disseminating successful interventions that may improve sleep health and overall wellness, are critical.
